Why cleanses are a waste of time

Many people go through periods of poor eating and drinking, like around the holidays or birthdays. So what about “cleanses” to “flush the toxins” out of your body?

Newsflash: your body already does that for you.

No other “cleansing” food or drink will do more than your body has already done. For example - a “liver cleanse” after a big night of alcohol and fatty food. Your liver already does its job, and the toxins leave your body soon after. No other diet will make your liver any more effective at eliminating toxins. There are thousands of people offering you many forms of cleansing, none of which have any merit. None help your body, and many have downsides like a lack of energy, protein, fibre and other nutrients - leaving you feeling grumpy and tired.

So - what if you want to help your body after an unhealthy period? Focus on clean and healthy eating - long term, not just for 3 days or a week. Eat minimally processed food, natural sources of protein, sufficient fluids, and lots of fruit and vegetables.
